A Pilgrim on El Camino de Santiago

After a summer break, Upper Room’s blog returns with a guest post from one of our former young adult leaders, Louis Brown. Louis now directs the national Catholic health care sharing ministry, CMF CURO. He recently made a pilgrimage hiking El Camino de Santiago (The Way of St. James) in Spain. He gave permission for […]

Intimacy with God and the Second Commandment

Intimacy with God has the primary result of deepening our union with him. It enables us to live out the Greatest Commandment and prepares us for Heaven. Our intimacy with God bears another sublime fruit as well. It is what enables us to obey the second commandment: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Mt […]

Intimacy with God: The Key to Everything

I used to wonder why Jesus never sat down with his disciples to systematically explain all the truths in Scripture and Tradition. Wouldn’t that have prevented a lot of confusion, false teachings and schisms over the centuries? Certainly he explained enough for our salvation, but over the past 2000 years countless arguments over what is […]

A Simple Way to Grow in Intimacy with God

Even more than we crave knowing God’s love, God thirsts for us to know him intimately.  Jesus declared, “As the Father loves me, so I love you. Abide in my love” (Jn 15:9). The apostle John confirmed: “God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them” (1 Jn […]

She should be of interest to Charismatics, though, because of her deep devotion to the Holy Spirit, which she promoted ardently. […]

DIY Praise & Worship in 3 Steps

One of the most powerful parts of our parish’s Easter liturgies is the praise and worship. We have been very blessed with gifted musicians whose worship leads the rest of our congregation in a beautiful and powerful unison that unveils a glimpse of Heaven. This glimpse of heavenly worship is not only for Easter, though, […]

Triduum: A Time of Hope

Before the light of Easter, the days of Jesus’ passion seemed very dark. Beginning on Holy Thursday at the Last Supper, Jesus warned his apostles of his death. Judas slipped away and sold him for 30 pieces of silver. Jesus and the other eleven went to the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus sweat blood as he […]

The Dynamics of Praise

“Why would anyone want to spend their Friday night doing praise and worship?” We are frequently asked this. It begs a deeper question: What’s so important about praise? In praise we recognize God. The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us, “Praise is the form of prayer which recognizes most immediately that God is God. […]
